Sky Revolutions conducts market research from time to time aimed at maintaining our knowledge and understanding of changing customer needs.

The results of our first Drone Effectiveness Study showed construction, energy and facilities management sectors seeking support from commercial operators. One of the key findings showed leading construction companies, asset and facilities managers reaping the rewards that come with drone surveying, but some still seeking guidance on how drones can help improve their business processes.

Sky Revolutions’ Director Ben Gorham: “The market for commercial drone services has boomed in the last 12 months with an ever-growing number of drone operators offering specialist aerial surveying. Early adopters that have understood the benefits are now reaping the rewards.” And the rewards are great – when it comes to commercial drone surveying, the case for return on investment is obvious. Drones are faster, safer, and more cost-effective than manual systems, and they can collect more data too. From large scale capital projects and major infrastructure surveys to single roof and building inspections – asset managers, project managers, and maintenance personnel in-the-know are having a field day with drones.

But with new market development comes an inevitable explosion in service providers – should buyers proceed with caution when it comes to employing drone operators? And are service providers clear how best to support those buyers?

We decided to go straight to our markets in this study and ask the question directly – how do our customers perceive commercial drone surveys, and what do they need from a service provider? Respondents were asked for their views on a range of questions from their perceptions of drones, to the support they need to make clear decisions. Results throw sharp focus on pilot competency and mandatory drone registration, suggesting a desire for enforced sector professionalism. This topic was realised in the subsequent government consultation.

Key results can be reviewed in an infographic which can be seen below.
