Marple Aqueduct Aerial Survey for Arcadis

Aerial Survey

Marple Aqueduct in Stockport is the highest canal aqueduct in England and the highest masonry-arch aqueduct in Britain. Our client needed to inspect the underside of the brickwork arches and the face of the brickwork to highlight any defects

The Canal and River Trust was installing a new parapet to the offside of the canal in order to help ensure public safety at the site.

Before the work was undertaken, our client required a full aerial inspection of the underside of the aqueduct arches and the brickwork which would allow them to scrutinise any defects in the structure.

Given the risks and difficulties of working at height in this challenging location, and the difficulties associated with constructing scaffolding at such a remote site, a drone was the logical choice, providing our client Arcadis with significant time and cost savings.

A full safety and risk assessment procedure was followed in advance of the drone deployment. Once in the air, our cameras were able to caputre ultra high definition images which allowed our client to make a set of immediate remidiaiton decisions.
